Visit the Antietam National Battlefield
The Antietam National Battlefield is a quick 15-minute ride from the campground.
Located in Sharpsburg, Maryland, Antietam is the site of one of the most significant battles of the American Civil War. On September 17, 1862, the Battle of Antietam became the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with over 23,000 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing. This Union victory halted the Confederate Army’s advance into the North and gave President Abraham Lincoln the momentum needed to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
Today’s battlefield is a serene and well-preserved park where visitors can walk the grounds, tour the historic landmarks, and learn about the pivotal moments of the battle. Key sites include the Dunker Church, Burnside Bridge, and the Sunken Road, known as Bloody Lane. The Antietam National Cemetery is also part of the park, commemorating the soldiers who fought and died in the conflict. The site offers a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the Civil War.
Antietam National Cemetery, also located in Sharpsburg, Maryland, was established in 1867 to honor the Union soldiers who fought and died in the Battle of Antietam. Over 4,700 soldiers are buried here, the majority of whom fell during this bloody Civil War battle. The cemetery is solemn and peaceful, with its iconic stone arch marking the entrance. Only Union soldiers were interred at the cemetery, while Confederate soldiers were buried elsewhere. The site also includes a monument dedicated to the unknown soldiers, making it a significant place of remembrance for those who sacrificed their lives.

Our Experience
For us, this was a one-night stopover as we made our way south to Big Bend National Park. Although it was a one-night stop we enjoyed our time here. After spending a day on the road we were able to set up and relax for the evening. In addition, the small campground offers the peace and quiet of the outdoors.
If you are in the area visiting Civil War sites in Hagerstown, and Antietam, this is a great little campground to set up in. In addition, if you are traveling along I80 in the area and need a place to rest this campground is a great location.
